The Blade from the North
IntroductionFreelancing as a sellsword has allowed Grim proximity with persons holding varying degrees of power and influence. Aside from a non-binding contract with the Maelstrom, he holds no true allegiance to any nation or organization. This neutrality has garnered him a reputation as a professional, discreet, and dependable swordsman. His only rule is, "No kids, and if I can help it, no innocents." Disappointing to some of his shadier clients, he's at least far cheaper than retaining an assassin for the casual escort. And his sense of humor makes him feel less like having a ravenous hound looking to bite its leash off, and more like the Roe you'd want on your side in a tavern brawl.Hidden beneath the surface, Grim's true motive is to uproot the underground syndicate that murdered his parents. And yet his morals may hold him back from further access into the underworld... Will the path ahead force him to make compromises?
Grim SyngetiHard to place his exact origin upon first hearing, his given name mixes conventions from several
Roe cultures across Hydaelyn.

PersonalityUpon first meeting, Grim comes off as reserved and polite - stereotypical for a devoted samurai. Only to catch you off guard with a slightly crass joke to lighten the mood. Sizing up the trustworthiness of new contacts early on as a defense mechanism, he'll often rely on teasing newcomers playfully to gauge their humor and agreeability.Beneath his reserved confidence and strangely personable demeanor, a passionate fighter burns within. Unsheathing his blade only acts to cast oil on it. On the other hand, put a beverage in his hand (or fishing rod, if it's in the morning),
and he's likely to engage in a breadth of conversation.
However, if he's having a drink on the job, it may be to put up with eccentric clients.Never looking for a fight beyond a hearty spar, Grim would actively avoid any true confrontation for as long as possible.
If you press him further while he talks you out a fight, pray tell you make notice when you're met with a silent, cold stare....though he isn't entirely invulnerable to someone melting his icy walls down...Bouts of hermitude has left a peculiar affect on him:
Slightly naive, unaccustomed to certain social norms, and is slow to trust,
yet he retains a care and curiosity for the people and their stories that surround him.And at the end of the day, no matter how strong his moral compass, he'll be the first to laugh at himself.

((The power of your Echo shifts your state of consciousness...your eyes open. As an aetherly observer, you float above Grim. He appears a little younger, with a different look in his eyes. Sitting on the edge of a dock, he prepares his hook with some bait...))
IntroductionFor the past few years Grim wandered the isles of the Northern Empty. The daily task of fishing kept the embers of his late father alive, feeling his presence each time he cast out a line into the sea. One day fate would bring a terrible storm to the region, breaking the rod he received in his youth. This sparked a realization...No longer would he wither away in solitude crippled by loss of his parents. Knowing little about their life in their native homeland of Eorzea, he set sail searching for answers.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Grim steps foot on the shores of Limsa shortly after the Calamity. The lands having gone through a meteoric turmoil, he is glad to see the people overcoming and bouncing back after the event. Further emboldened in this new place, a firey conviction burns in his heart.~Five Years Before Present DayGrim spent his first few weeks in Limsa aiding the Maelstrom with his talents in fishing and carpentry. As the sun set he frequented taverns. Many conversations leading to acquaintances and annoyances... he'd eventually meet an elderly couple who were friends of his parents. While the couple became somewhat estranged with Grim's parents before they departed to the North, they never mentioned it was on bad terms. "You still have family in Eorzea..." the old woman relays. They spoke of his distant cousins residing in Ul'dah. With little hesitation, he set off the next morning to the jewel in the desert.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Arriving in Thanalan during nightfall, Grim makes his way through the new city searching for the home address given to him by the couple in Limsa.Wandering down darker and emptier alleys, Grim senses eyes peering into his back. Turning to look behind him, he's met with the silhouettes of four men staring back at him. One of them call out,"What a familiar looking Roe we have here, mus'be a ghost!"Shit, shit, this isn't good... I didn't even think this through...Standing still, his anxiety eating away at him as the men approach him with their weapons in hand...A shadowy figure appears, dropping from a balcony above; a person concealed beneath a hooded shawl with a large katana at their side, lands between Grim and the four assassins.Unsheathing their blade in an instant, they strike down two of the approaching assailants with a single slash. The other two stop in their tracks... watching as their allies bleed out on the ground before them. It's clear to Grim they're in shock. One of men, older than the rest of the group, retorts, "Y-you... two ghosts?" They drop their guard and take a step back, "Don't think this changes a thing!" The men dash off into the cover of night...Sliding their blade carefully back into its sheath, the figure turns to look back at Grim revealing the face of an elderly, bearded Hyur. The swordsman beckons to Grim, "You can trust me. We have to get out of the city immediately."✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Grim and the swordsman walk off the beaten path towards Southern Thanalan under a moonless sky. Grim tells the swordsman of his travels, his tone changing as he recognizes the danger surrounding his family..."...My cousins, are they... all dead?" he says dejectedly. The swordsman stops for a moment. Hearing Grim's story plagues his mind as he realizes... I haven't heard from you in nearly 10 years... and it's a fact, you're gone. I didn't want to believe they had actually found you...Turning back to face Grim, the swordman puts his hand on Grim's shoulder to comfort him, nodding."I'm sorry son, however, while we may not technically be family..." He goes on to reveal his identity: Jurei, a brother-like figure of Grim's late father. The two had studied with the same master from the East, living in Ul'dah for much of their lives."I retired from adventuring a few years ago. Now, I spend most of my time keeping to myself, but I always end up helping the occasional traveler. And as you discovered, the city can be troublesome for newcomers. It's been worse after the Calamity. Though in your case, I daresay it's a little different..."Grim asks Jurei why his parents left Eorzea."They met and soon fell in love, but it couldn't have been worse timing. Grim, your father was... he was a good man at heart, but he also drifted where the gil was good... offering to take questionable jobs outside the adventurer's guild. He got mixed up with an underground syndicate that demanded fealty. He was given a task he couldn't wrestle with morally... and he wasn't one to willingly accept a punishment. So they fled North, hoping to escape their grasp."✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Despite the journey to Ul'dah and surviving a brink with death, Grim can't seem to rest. His thoughts drift as he looks at the stars above. His eyes wander over to Jurei sleeping a few feet away from him... he feels a presence emanating from his sword."...Father?" he says to himself. Realizing how delirious he must be from over exhaustion, he shakes his head and stands up to stretch. After taking a deep breath, he exhales. Tiredness is finally upon him.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .The sun rises a few rises a few hours later. Jurei wakes up, rolling over to see Grim bowing on his knees to him."Uh...well, good morning, Grim." He says through a yawn."Jurei. Thank you. I owe you my life." He looks up at Jurei, continuing, "Please, accept me as your pupil. I wish to become a Samurai."Jurei looks back at Grim with a look of slight shock. Wrinkles appearing at the edges of his eyes, he grins as he recognizes the genuine tone in his voice. "Very well, Grim."Watching Grim's face light up in the morning light, Jurei is struck with how similar he looks to his old friend... a spitting image of him, eerily similar to how he appeared before he left.
Two Years LaterTraining in hiding outside of Little Ala Mhigo, Grim developed his skills with the blade under Jurei's tutelage. Excelling quickly in a short time, Jurei fears something concerning inside of Grim. Having originally come to him as a bright-eyed but broken young man, he's contrasted greatly with a silently imposing confidence. His temperament strangely calmer, but his eyes show a darker depth. An obsession lying beneath. He's a little...too much like him, and not in the way I had hoped. I pray to the gods that I've steered him in the right direction.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .The day comes where Grim and Jurei decide to return to Ul'dah.
Feeling confident of his pupil's skills, Jurei leaves Grim as he goes to meet with an old friend in private. Grim wanders the streets at night, keeping one eye behind him everywhere he goes.He senses something is amiss... a sly smirk appears on his face. With his gaze affixed in front of him, Grim makes another turn down an empty alley. As he reaches a dead end, he turns around. The familiar sight of four men stare back at-
MIND GOES BLANK
Breathing heavily, his blade splattered with reddish hues, Grim looks down at three cadavers sitting in pooling blood. His mind races as he tries to center himself in the situation. Heart pounding from an immense amount of adrenaline. He looks up to see one of the men trembling at the sight of his Comrades' bodies. The same older assassin from a few years before. Inable to make a sound, he stares back at Grim with a terror in his eyes. He tries to speak, "You- you're not actually-"Grim takes a step forward, towering over the man gazing back at him. Up closer, the man notices Grim's orange eye radiating a strange aura. They respond in a seething tone, "I̴'̷m̸ ̴n̵o̶t̶,̵ ̸w̷h̶a̶t̴?̴"Without giving an answer, the man begins taking steps back. Grim tightens the grip on his katana... before exhaling deeply, the tension evaporating from his upper body. Noticing Grim's hesitation, the man makes a break for it and runs off around the corner...Appearing around the opposite corner, Jurei walks towards Grim with a concerned but disapproving glare. His words stern, Jurei lectures,"I'm glad to see you're unharmed, however... you have failed the principle of conducting yourself in self-defense. This trip doubled as a test. You and I both knew the syndicate would be on our tracks once we re-entered the city. Instead of choosing to stay in public, you led that patrol straight to their deaths. It matters not what they intended for you. A murderous vengeance overtook your judgement, lashing out at the men before they even grabbed their hilts. You may have strength, but you have much to learn if you wish to be a Samurai."Rage slowly leaves Grim's eyes, as they well up with tears. His head droops, as he drops his sword to the ground. Realizing what he's done, all he can think to do is bow down on his knees.
Half a year before Present DayHanding his ticket with a Maelstrom seal to the Gridanian Guard, Grim boards the airship headed back towards Limsa.A matured air surrounds him. Still confident, but there's no longer a lost rage in his eyes. Scanning for a bench on the main deck, he takes a seat. He stares down at the Black Shroud beneath him, soon obscured by thin clouds. His thoughts turn to reflect on the last time he saw Jurei.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ ."Grim, I think it's best for you to leave Thanalan. You've done well, and I'm... truly proud of your repentance. Your true training begins now. But, there is nothing left for me to teach you." Jurei lets out a deep breath, looking back at his pupil with a proud expression. As if a massive weight was lifted off of Grim's shoulders, the few months spent working for the adventurer's guild in Ul'dah for free has paid off, teaching lessons of humility. Letting out a sigh of relief, he attempts to compose himself,"Uncle Jurei... I mean," Grim stands up and bows his head, "Thank you, Sensei. I hope to follow on the path you have lit for me. But, I have to ask, how do I continue my training?"Jurei grins, crossing his arms, "That my boy... is going to have to come from within." He ponders for a moment, "But, I do have one final suggestion for you."Grim lifts his head, waiting to hear Jurei speak to him as his master for the last time. He listens intently to his words."For much of your training, I have seen your father... speak to you. I didn't want to get involved with the aetheric bond you have with him as you developed... but, I wanted to guide you in the direction away from the same fate he endured." Jurei pauses for a moment, looking out the window. He grins, "Maybe it's time you speak with your mother. While she was fearsome with a bow, her gift to our realm was her song... Gridania holds the traditions of her musical skills."His eyes glistening, Grim bows again. Jurei approaches him, placing his hand on his shoulder, looking down at him, "You'll do well."✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Eyes closed, Grim smiles, feeling his Uncle Jurei's hand firmly consoling him as the memory plays out.He takes out a harp, and begins to perform a tune from his youth. Hearing this often as Father went on fishing expeditions, Grim would perform on his harp a melody Mother used to sing.As he finishes the tune, memories of his past flood him... visions of the quiet and tender moments with his parents. He laughs, saying under his breath, "It's so simple, it's a little silly really..." His heart relaxes, attaining a sense of spiritual clarity.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .Landing back in Limsa for the first time in 4 years, Grim returns and re-enlists in the Maelstrom. Using his newfound skills, he begins making a name for himself in their ranks as a dependable adventurer.Returning to the taverns at night, he would soon meet the old couple from before, telling them the tales of his time in Thanalan and Gridania.Smiling back at him, the old woman responds with a loving tone,"They would be proud of you, Grim."✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦ .
Thank you for reading! This is the first chapter I've completed for Grim's full backstory. I'm currently working on two stories that come before this one, and another that comes directly afterwards. Stay tuned!
Timezone: UTC -6 (North America)
Open To: All RP, OOC Chatting (21+ only please)
MSQ Progress: End of SHB
Light & Discord: ✅ (After we chat a bit)W/T: ✅ Walk-up (tag) and tells (anytime) are welcomed! IC is fine, however OOC is required for anything considered MRP (see below).
Looking to making any new connections, acquaintanceships, and potential friends! Please note: I DON'T blur the lines between OOC and IC, and I'd expect you to do the same.Style: As mentioned above, I'm open to all hues of RP, generally sitting in a mature tone, but I am pretty flexible. Not everything has to be srs all the time too. I try to match the vibe of who I'm rp'ing with: sometimes only writing short-n-quick dialogue, other times writing longer posts. In general I prefer repeat encounters, building a narrative naturally overtime.I have a few years of D&D and writing under my belt, however I'm still new to XIV (5 months in). I've tried to work this "freshness" into my character, looking to develop Grim's connections within Eorzea as I learn more myself. I'm open to just about any type of encounters to throw Grim in!MRP: ❓ Discussing boundaries is important. While I'm very open to exploring mature subjects, I require OOC communication before doing so. This isn't only for my taste, but also for yours. I would not feel comfortable making anyone else uncomfortable - any drama should stay IC, and should be consensual to each writer what is happening to their characters.Maiming:🚫Grim can get beat up pretty badly, but his story is far from ending, and doesn't plan on losing an arm or leg anytime soon either.Warrior of Light: ❓ He is not the WoL (and the ball is up in the air if he's a protagonist or not...). I personally treat the MSQ as a thing that happens in the world, while also taking liberties with it. Grim's world can accept both ideas that one WoL exists, and that several others exist too. I mention this since I plan to weave the concept of the echo into Grim's character.Keep it cool and fun ~ Looking forward to meeting you!

Plot-Hooks
Personal Story Quest - Grim's main RP scenario, long-form, mature themes.
Career Quests - Services, work, and various scenarious involving Grim's skills.
Side Quests - Miscellaneous, slice of life, or experimental scenes.
An Underground Syndicate (Personal Story Quest)
[Will contain Mature Themes]Around thirty years ago, Grim's father would become entangled with a group shrouded in mystery. Little is known about this network except two things: Endless gil for the cost of your soul. Their objective? Unclear. Many laugh it off as just another story to scare off tourists. In a city rife with conspiracies, it can be difficult to tell what is hearsay. But Grim knows their existence is real...Ever since that encounter a few months ago, their trail has been silent to him. It's probably for the better... and yet whenever he's in Ul'dah, Grim's ears can't help but perk up when someone mentions tales about a group working in the shadows.I really shouldn't bother with this anymore... my quest for vengeance is at an end. And yet, something gnaws at me... Uncle didn't want to risk running with them, let alone actively oppose them. Has this thirst for revenge shifted to whispers of my moral responsibility? ...What gives me the right anyway?
I'd strongly recommend reading Grim's backstory before engaging with this quest's content
Sword for Sale (Career Quest)
[Open to All Themes]While not actively on duty for the Maelstrom, Grim takes on jobs in his spare time. For gil? Well, those artisanal perfumes aren't going to pay for themselves... but, his training has given him a purpose to put his skills to proper use.His resume includes working as a bodyguard and escort for various sultans, merchants and gatherers, and scholars looking to explore dangers depths to further their research. He also has gotten roped into guarding (or rather, babysitting) the child of an Ishguardian high house while they played "pretend dragoon hero" in the Coerthas Highlands...Not one to advance a mission based in evil intentions, if the price is high enough Grim won't turn away a job from suspicious individuals or organizations. Afterall, he's keen to the corruption and malign intent that can plague nations. And there is often good that can be done when avoiding the eyes of said nations... But no matter the price, an assassin for hire he is not.
Quite the Catch (Career Quest)
[Open to All Themes...yes I'm working on max level fisher, gimme a little time lol]Casting a line opens oneself to several possibilities: a full belly, gil to support oneself, braggartly sport, and the stories that come when standing on the apex of the land and sea. While he may not boast the skill of the top chefs of The Bismarck, Grim was practically born with salt water in his veins."Now, this is the way to properly eat this type of fish!" He preaches to you of his 'Northern-inspired delicacy,' swearing the fermentation brings out a delicious, sweet taste. You look down at a dank stew, and fear his nostalgia is altering his taste buds... mayhap it would've been better if you just have him return a fish, uncooked, preserved freshly in an ice-box.
...Wait, you mean me? (Side Quest)
[Open to All Themes]You're certain this is the guy they told you about... large frame, glasses, and a big sword...or was it a harp? It doesn't matter, you're sure you found him.As you try to explain yourself to him, you notice his left brow raises and lips part wordlessly conveying his confusion. He begins to respond, "I think you might be mista-" But you insist he must be the person you were told about to help you with your task."Hmm..." Grim ponders for a moment before nodding along. As he listens to your request, it matters not who he is. Playing along, he continues, "Very well, then. I'll offer my services to you any way that I can."
Epic Tales of the Unknown (Side Quest)
[Open to All Themes]His bass voice inable to project a distinguishable lyric, Grim's bardic talents rely on his harp.As he inherited a knack for fishing and fighting with a sword from his father, his mother's influence lay in the melodies she played throughout his childhood. Knowing little of their meaning, the tunes swirl ablaze in his mind as he plucks away.Requests are welcomed, however Grim typically strays from the common practice. No two performances are alike, as his mind wanders with the meaning in the given moment, offering a new perspective with altered harmony and ornamentations on an old melody.

"Son of a Cruel Song"
Blade from the North.Born and raised in the Aerslaen archipelago, Grim was taught early how to fish, work with tools, and survive. As he grew, so did his desire to leave the remote region. He wondered why his parents journeyed from Eorzea to this destitute place. Never giving a clear explanation, they stubbornly refused to join him on his journeys to Sharlayan. Returning from a trip, he is met with the sight of his parents murdered in cold blood. Grief sends him into a period of hermitude. A few years later, being struck out of his depressed haze by a massive storm, he realizes he must journey South for answers.Working for the Maelstrom with his skills by day, he frequents the plaza and tavern's in Limsa attempting to find leads on his parents. Meeting an old couple claiming to be acquaintances of his parents, he learns of their previous lives: his father was a skilled swordsman, while his mother held minor celebrity as a bard. They go onto tell him of his cousins who still may reside in Ul'dah, and Grim sets off to find them.Arriving at night, he encounters a group of assassins, but is saved by a swordsman. As if fate had destined it, the swordsman is revealed to be Jurei, an old friend of his father. He tells Grim of a syndicate that threatened both of his parent's lives requiring them to flee. Realizing he must learn to properly defend himself, Grim resigns himself to training with Jurei. Two more years in hiding, honing his skills, a streak of revenge births in Grim's soul. Returning to Ul'dah, he tests his newfound skills against another group of assassins, but is scolded by Jurei for his actions.
((Along a wall, a Sea Wolf catches your eye. His long green coat is adorned with golden trims, a motif which extends along his gloves and spiked boots. A large katana sits comfortably alongside his hip, housed in a decorated sheath. Subtle musky perfumes of fig and gridanian nut linger as you approach. Looking through his magnifiers, you're met with a slightly piercing, but friendly gaze. One brown eye contrasted by the other with a subtle orange hue. After introducing yourself, he bows his head for a moment. A warm smirk appears, responding in a direct yet carefully paced tone...))
